Autocross |
|
|
Autocross events are low to medium speed car
control events typically run on large open parking lots or short course
type training tracks. In all cases a course will be defined using
traffic cones. One driver at a time negotiates a course laid out with
the cones, or pylons, testing their skill against the clock. Time
penalties are charged for disturbing cones. In most regions, the penalty
is 2 seconds per cone. There is an upper speed guideline for autocross,
which is intended to keep speeds in a range that most drivers might
encounter on the streets and highways. The fastest cars at an autocross
should not exceed 60-70 mph.

Autocross is a type of driving event that emphasizes
safe, low threat but intense competition for participants. An autocross
is a timed competition where drivers navigate one at a time through a
temporary course marked by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track
with other cars. Generally, each driver takes three to six runs at an
event. A driver is awarded the best time of all runs taken. Autocross
tends to place more emphasis on car handling and driver skill than on
horsepower. |

|
Speeds are slower when compared to DE track
events but the intensity level can equal or exceed those driving events.
Autocross courses are typically 40 to 70 seconds in length but the
activity level (steering, throttle and brake inputs) is generally higher
than a lap at the track. |

Autocross is an
inexpensive, safe way to experience the handling potential of your car.
It helps you discover your car's capabilities and limitations, making
you a better and safer driver on the road, and it develops your own
driving ability. Many drivers use it as a stepping stone, along with DE
events, into the sport of club racing. Like any driving event, the
challenge of beating your own time is high on the thrill scale. |
|
|
Safety is always a concern. Safety rules for autocross are the same as those for
DE. A current annual tech inspection and current helmet rating being
the most important. All autocross events, whether Nord Stern or another
club, provide onsite inspection for those that do not have an annual
tech inspection. Always arrive early to allow time for tech,
registration and a course walk. You will be expected to work the course
while another run group is out so plan accordingly with proper attire.
Rain or shine, the fun continues.
